The UPA alliance in power during 2004 to 2009 must have done some good while other political rivals took some wrong steps which led to return of UPA for the term 2009 to 2014. This time, one of the biggest allies of Congress, the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), has been a critical headache due to involvement in 2G spectrum scam. The Congress party is also crippled due to various other scams and corruption issues.
Dr. Manmohan Singh’s personal integrity is beyond doubts, opines political experts of the nation. But his leadership has been severally questioned in the context of handling corruption issues. Though he has been in great pressure to act against the guilty, he has blamed the multi-party alliance system of politics in India and raised it as his helplessness to be able to handle things properly.
It is not yet 2 years in office, the Congress party, under the leadership of Dr. Singh is reeling under pressure due to 2G spectrum scam, ISRO-Devas deal, cash-for-votes scam, Adarsh Housing scam, black money issue and also in a critical situation with the proposal of the Lokpal bill rightly demanded by Anna Baburao Hazare.
There is an election coming in 2014; Dr. Singh will retire by then, but can he still give Congress the position to return to power under his able leadership? Standing in 2011, the year 2014 may seem to be far away but in the game of politics, the real campaign is during the 5 years in between elections. He who plays well in these 5 years, wins over others.
Right now, the Congress party is on the edge of a sword and people are disgusted, angry and restless. The government of the people and by the people doesn’t at all seem to them like a government for the people. The leaders in the party, instead of trying to mend a broken situation, is callously messing up and adding to the woes of the party and its leader.
