Cheers mobile network outage

In July 2009 Etisalat DB announced a long term passive infrastructure sharing agreement with Reliance Communications to accelerate Etisalat’s roll-out of GSM Mobile and other telecom services in 15 telecom circles in India. On 20th Jan Cheers mobile users suddenly faced network outage, Delhi was the most affected zone, with customers unable to make or receive calls.

At that time, in an official statement, Cheer intimated customers that it was a temporary outage due to technical difficulties beyond their control.

Now NDTV’s report has surfaced which probably throws some light into the incident why Cheers’ network remained down for the fourth day: Anil Ambani group company Reliance Communications (RCom) said that it has disconnected telecom operator Etisalat DB’s network because of non-payment of charges. RCom Spokesperson said:

Despite repeated reminders, payments have been inordinately delayed by EDB (Etisalat DB) without any reasonable cause, leading to the disconnection of services.

According to Cellular Operators Association of India, Cheers has over 1.67 million subscribers in the Andhra Pradesh, Delhi, Gujarat, Haryana, Karnataka, Kerala, Maharashtra, Mumbai, Punjab, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu (including Chennai), Uttar Pradesh (East and West), Madhya Pradesh and Bihar telecom circles.
