Buying Android phone?

Are you planning to buy a Android smartphone sometime soon? Then you should know that some 56% of the top 20 smartphones in the market runs on outdated and insecure versions of the Android OS most manufacturers don’t update their phones after they’ve been in the market for just one year. This sounds the alarm.

Which smartphones are the worst in terms of security standards? Here’s the least secure models (in serial order, based upon study by security vendor Bit9):-

  • Samsung Galaxy Mini, HTC Desire, Sony Ericsson Xperia X10, Sanyo Zio, HTC Wildfire, Samsung Epic 4G, LG Optimus S, Samsung Galaxy S, Motorola Droid X, LG Optimus One, Motorola Droid 2, HTC Evo 4G

Most secure Android smartphones: Samsung Nexus S, HTC Droid Incredible, Samsung Galaxy S2, HTC Sensation and the T-Mobile G2.

Harry Sverdlove, CTO of Bit9 says:

The problem with Android is that the distribution of their updates, the responsibility falls on the manufacturer, not on Google. The metaphor I used to use was it would be akin to buying a personal computer from Dell, and having Dell be responsible for updating Windows for you.
